A handwriting tool which organizes the drawing in a tree structure

In drawing tasks such as lectures or discussions both in analog form (paper or blackboard) or digital form (digital ink), the drawings can be organized in a tree structure. Each node in the tree contains a set of strokes. Common strokes of two nodes are extracted to construct the parent node of the two child nodes. The merit of this tree organization is as follow: Sharing of common strokes saves the effort of drawing; Additional comments are added as a child node of the target; Logical relationship between drawings is explicitly represented. In this paper we propose a handwriting system which supports the creation, browsing and editing of drawings through an interface which deals the tree structure explicitly. We evaluated the prototype of the system in two ways: Experience of the use of the system and a user test in note taking. We compared the result of the test with that of Windows Journal. The evaluation suggests us several points to improve the system: the automatic addition of nodes and the way to present the thumbnails of nodes.
